Caving

Some of Dorset’s most unique caves are situated within the limestone confines of Portland.  With its proximity to the caving Mecca that is The Mendips, Portland is an excellent alternative for a few days by the sea, and where better to stay than the comfort of The Esplanade.  There are both dry caves and sea caves to explore and The Wessex Cave Club is an excellent source of information.  They can be contacted via www.wessex-cave-club.org  for further information and visits.  The pages of www.uk-blue.com/Pages/caving provide a good overview of the area.  It is also a good place to start looking, particularly if caving is something of interest to you.  The Outdoor Education Centre in Weymouth will also be able to point you in the right direction with regard to local course, guides or visits.  They can be contacted on 01305 784927 or at www.dorset-lea.org.uk/weymouthOEC for further information.
